The volunteers behind Belgians of Seattle

Our founding board is a small group of Belgian expats who've each spent decades in the Pacific Northwest — and decided the region deserved a real Belgian community. No dues, no politics, just people putting in the time.

Professional background

Ferdane Bekmezci brings more than 17 years of experience in data science, artificial intelligence, and technology leadership. During her career at Microsoft, she served as a Principal Data Scientist within the Windows and Devices organization. In her final five years, she led the Responsible AI workstream across AI systems developed and deployed on Windows, helping shape Microsoft's approach to ethical AI and contributing to one of the very first Ethical AI Blueprints presented to the White House.

Originally trained in International Business at Maastricht University, Ferdane also serves as a Jurist for thesis defenses in Foreign Trade at Haute École Mosane (HELMo) in Liège, Belgium. After retiring from Microsoft in 2025, she chose to focus on her family, community initiatives, and projects that strengthen cultural and social connections.

Connection & vision

Born in Genk and raised in both Flanders and Wallonia, Ferdane spent her early years in Genk before moving to Liège with her family. She relocated to Bellevue, Washington, in 2005 when her husband accepted an opportunity with Microsoft. Together, they have two sons and have called the Pacific Northwest home for more than two decades.

Ferdane believes that the expatriate journey is both exhilarating and challenging, making strong community connections especially important. Throughout her years in the United States, she has remained actively engaged with fellow Belgians and has long felt the need for a more connected and inclusive Belgian community in the region. Her vision is to bring Belgians and friends of Belgium together to celebrate their heritage, support one another, build lasting friendships, and create opportunities for future generations to stay connected to Belgian culture. While the 2026 FIFA World Cup may have provided the spark, her goal is to build a thriving and sustainable community.
